How Technology has Changed Interior Design
By rezlist-chime-me July 03, 2019

As innovations in technology continue to reach new markets, changes to these industries quickly trickle down to related sub-markets.

One of those sub markets that has been hugely altered after hitting the real estate space is interior design, with the entire process requiring less professional guidance and time, as bottlenecks throughout designing your home’s aesthetic are streamlined through solutions such as social media.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into some of those changes.

The brainstorming process

Similar to real estate, true interior design used to be something you’d consult a professional for. Going through catalogs and window shopping at your local shopping center were amongst the different ways to gather design ideas, but it was much harder to be certain about a potential choice.

Fortunately, technology has evolved this process, as we stand on the shoulders of giants and grab ideas from some of the greatest design minds of all time. Using social media and other crowdsourcing platforms puts the user in the shoes of the greatest interior designers with processes like “Pinning” via Pinterest, allowing you to create the ideal living space without ever taking a step out of your home.

Similar platforms like Houzz have streamlined consumer catalogs by providing direct links to every piece throughout professionally designed home interiors. With instant purchase and comparison options, browsing for a new kitchen table feels intuitive and effortless all the way through.

Smart home options

We’ve made a few friends in recent years that make home living as seamless as possible. Names like Alexa and Google Assistant kind be found all around a contemporary living space, making kicking off your shoes at the end of a hard day the only thing you have to worry about. Give Alexa a shout and your air conditioning and lighting are instantly at your preference with your favorite show prepped in the background.

The possibilities in today’s marketplace are endless, with smart fridges (maybe you want to call an Uber from your fridge), intelligent door bells with video capabilities, and interactive mirrors with scheduling assistants that make daily routines as stress-free as possible.

In addition to wowing your house guests, most of these devices come with power management and cost monitoring features that’ll help the device pay for itself throughout its lifetime. You can take it a step further and invest in a solar roof that’ll let you sell electricity back to your provider. With incentives such as rebates, tax advantages, and the elimination of your power bill, the transition to solar continues to become more feasible.

Logistics and distribution

We mentioned being able to order an entire living room set without ever getting out of your bed. Here’s even more good news. All of these items can be shipped right to your door for one low price of $0.

Amazon continues to change every game they decide to play, offering free-shipping on close to anything that’s sold through one of their many warehouses (not always the case for third-party seller, unfortunately).

Furniture warehousing stores, retailers, and many others quickly followed suit offering the same free-shipping, or very little shipping charges, completely changing the interior design dynamic. Borrowing a truck from a friend or renting a vehicle for an hourly rate is a thing of the past… just make sure you can get the box through your front door when it arrives. There’s ways around that, fortunately.

Outfitting your home with the latest aesthetic and smart home options, similar to that of a movie star’s home, has never been easier. Now available to everyone, these innovations aren’t only found within the homes of the rich and famous. Thanks, technology.
